Why does walking make us happier?
Walking increases the blood flow through our brains and bodies, and it has a positive influence on our stress response system, so by walking you actually calm your nerves. When you walk with friends, you have the added benefit of social connection which is shown to lower rates of depression. If you can manage to get into nature, you can also benefit from forest bathing!
How can you do it?
To get the most benefit, try to make walking a regular habit of at least 30 minutes 3-4 times per week. You can also practice at work when you feel overwhelmed, get up and take a walk around your office, and it will help clear your mind and allow you to focus and be more productive when you return.
So, put on your shoes and head out the door!
